Why your MacBook screen cracked — it’s almost never the impact you think

Why your MacBook screen cracked — it’s almost never the impact you think

We replace MacBook screens every week. Most customers think they dropped it. Most of the time they didn’t — the actual cause is something they didn’t notice happening.

The hairline-from-the-hinge crack

Open up almost any MacBook with a cracked panel and the crack starts somewhere along the bottom edge of the display, near one of the hinges, and propagates outwards in a wishbone pattern.

That’s not impact damage. That’s a single grain of grit, a charging cable, an AirPods case, or a USB-C dongle that was sitting on the keyboard when the lid was closed. The lid clamped down, the foreign object made point contact with the panel, and the glass cracked.

Apple’s own guidance on this is buried in their fine print: “do not store loose objects on the keyboard”. They know. The clearance between keyboard and screen on modern unibodies is one or two millimetres — less on the 14″ and 16″ Pros — and a 3mm AirPods case will hairline-crack the panel with no impact at all.

How to tell if that’s what happened to yours

Three signs:

  • The crack starts at or near the bottom edge of the screen, where the hinge meets the display.
  • The pattern radiates outward in curves rather than running straight across.
  • You don’t remember dropping it. Most drops produce a crack at the corner the laptop landed on, with associated case scuffing.

If all three are true, your AirPods are probably the culprit. Check the keyboard for a faint indent on the corresponding row of keys.

How to stop it happening again

  • Don’t put anything on the keyboard before closing the lid — even a USB-C dongle, even briefly.
  • Don’t transport the laptop with a charger coiled inside the closed lid.
  • Microfibre cloths between keyboard and screen aren’t necessary for modern MacBooks (and weren’t for any since 2016) — they actually trap dust against the screen and make hairline cracks more likely. Apple stopped including them for a reason.
  • If you carry your MacBook in a backpack, give it a sleeve. The pressure across the closed lid from a heavy book or bottle outside the laptop’s compartment is enough to flex the panel.

What replacement looks like

For all unibody MacBooks (2016–current), the screen is a full assembly: the LCD, the backlight, the lid, the camera, the antennae, and the hinge cabling all come as one part. You can’t replace just the glass on a Retina MacBook — the panel is laminated, and the moment you split it the colour and brightness uniformity are gone.

So the job is: source a genuine Apple display assembly, transfer over the camera and any model-specific cabling, calibrate the True Tone sensor against the new panel, and reassemble. About three hours on the bench. Same-day for any model we keep panels in stock for — usually MacBook Air 13″/15″ and MacBook Pro 14″/16″ of the M1, M2, and M3 generations.

The number you actually want

Apple Support’s quote for an out-of-warranty MacBook Pro 14″ screen is around £629. Our genuine-OEM replacement on the same machine, fitted same-day with the True Tone calibration done, runs £289 with a 12-month warranty. Same panel, different supply chain.
